Simplify the big vision! For the month of August, I have committed to writing a daily blog that shares different successes and challenges I have had as a small business owner. I won’t know the topic until that day rolls around and I open the computer. Why have I done this? It is part of my big vision! In the month of September, I intend to start writing a book. While I have a pretty good focus for the book, I am getting more clarity each and every day. Not only will daily blogging get me in the habit of writing, it will focus my vision in and make the process easier.

As a business owner, I have goals. What business owner doesn’t have them? How do you not feel overwhelmed by your goals? How do you simplify the big vision? Everything in today’s society is about being fast, making things happen immediately, hitting that goal yesterday. Yet, in reality, it takes time.

One of my favorite phrases that I’ve more recently heard is “It took 10 years to become an overnight success.”. We see “success stories” come out of nowhere but so often we don’t see the back story, what it took to get to the next level. We are made to believe that this person just magically made it. We sometimes feel less than because we haven’t “made it” as quickly.

Rarely if ever does someone hit success overnight! Let’s be realistic about building a business. It takes work! It takes incremental steps! Why not take charge of your success? If you own a business, you have a vision, of where you want the business to go. So often, what you don’t have is the roadmap of how to get there. How do you simplify the big vision so the roadmap seems manageable even through the ups and downs?

One of the best ways for me not to feel overwhelmed is to have the big vision but to break it down to two large chunks to work on each and every month. These are items that you can’t get done in a day or two. You still need time and effort to make them happen. Once you have those two items, you are on your way to accomplishing great things! I then break down those two items to smaller manageable daily tasks to help achieve those goals.

What happens? At the end of the month, I can see the progress and celebrate my success! What does this do? It takes me one step closer to my bigger vision for success. That may be your vision for the year, three years, five years or more. Entrepreneurship is all about putting one foot in front of the other and taking action. It will never be a straight path but creating your focus on two items each month makes business ownership more manageable and less overwhelming.
