While there are many things you must know how to do or learn how to do when you start a business, consistent action is probably one of the most important tools. I’ve seen many entrepreneurs who started down one road only to turn quickly to another path. While flexibility is good and a key ingredient, you also must be patient and give each opportunity time to work.
For example, if you launch a new service/product and don’t immediately have a great response, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good product or service. What’s your rollout strategy? What’s your plan to get in front of people? What’s your plan to follow up? These are all essential questions that require consistent action.
The Gambler by Kenny Rogers says it right. While it is talking about gambling and not business, there is strategy involved with both.
“You’ve got to know when to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run”
As the owner of BatCat Media Group, I’m often asked by potential clients what is that one strategy to get instant results. They want the magic bullet, the instant gratification, the “one thing” that will elevate them above all others. While Google Ads, Social Media Ads and other forms of online advertising may provide you with the quicker play, the budget must be there to support it.
Marketing and business are similar; it starts from the dream or the vision. From there, you set the goals, strategies, and action steps that advances your business down the path. It’s consistent action that implements the plan. When you finally hit that goal, it doesn’t mean you have finished the work because there are always new goals to be met. Starting and growing a business is a process. When you are a business owner, it is essential that you enjoy the journey. Some days will be hard, and some will be easy but if you aren’t passionate about your work, it isn’t worth it.
It’s important when starting and growing a business to take consistent action in showing up every day with conviction. Have a plan! Know your avatar or ideal client. Understand that it takes consistent action each day to achieve your goals AND most of all don’t give up! Push through the fear that may come up. Push through the doors that close. Understand that there is no straight line to success. We hear success stories that look incredible BUT what we don’t hear is the journey to the success AND how the company reached one pinnacle but is striving for the next one. Owning a business is a journey not a destination. Take consistent action each day. If it’s you alone in a startup, take consistent action. If it’s a team, lead them to take consistent action.
