Building step by step! Don’t we all wish it was that easy. As a building goes up step by step so does a business. I was walking by this huge construction project in Delray Beach early this morning. I thought to myself that this project is taking forever, but it’s really not. The building pictured here is the 4th building in Phase One. The first building is complete and the second one appears to be almost done. It’s a slow go but I can see the progress they are making over time.

Too often, it can be overwhelming because while we may be making small daily progress, the larger changes take time to see their impact. We don’t see the “end result” that we want to see until much, much later.

How do you stay focused and not get overwhelmed because you aren’t getting to your goal “fast” enough? As a business owner, it isn’t easy. If you are working in the business too much, instead of on the business, it is almost impossible to make the changes that need to happen. You are too stuck in the day-to-day to see the big picture.

Three tips for building step by step:

  1. Schedule time to work on your business: By time, I don’t simply mean an hour or two a week. Schedule at least 5-10 hours to really focus on your business. Look at where you are and what you want. As your business grows and you can remove yourself from more of the day-to-day, do it.
  2. Look at the 30,000 foot view: Go BIG! Think of your one-year and five-year goals and put action steps in motion to hit those.
  3. Get an accountability partner or coach: If you want results, you need someone to hold you accountable to hitting your goals.

Owning a business can be daunting but so rewarding! Stay focused on your goals, dedicate time to work on the big picture so you continue to grow your business.
